CORINTHIANS 1:10

Walk It (Unity) Out

1 Corinthians 1:10

"I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose."

Unity in the church is not preserved by agreement, it is preserved by character.

This statement is a powerful shift in perspective. It suggests that the "glue" holding a community together isn’t a lack of disagreement, but the internal quality of the people involved. Here is a breakdown of how that looks in practice:

The Limitation of Agreement

Agreement is often fragile because it relies on external factors. If unity is based on everyone having the same opinion on every theological nuance, political view, or musical style, it will shatter the moment someone grows or changes.

* Uniformity vs. Unity: Biblical unity is not uniformity; it is harmony.

   * Uniformity is everyone being the same (like a brick wall). Unity is different parts working together for one purpose (like a human body) (Body of Christ)

   * Uniformity seeks to make everyone a "clone." (Don't insult God)

      * 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

         * "Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ... Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many."

      * Psalm 139:14

         * I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

   * If God wanted uniformity, He wouldn't have created the "Body" metaphor.

      * God deliberately engineered us to be different so that we would need each other.

      * Agreement in the Bible usually refers to The Gospel and The Mission, not the "Non-Essentials" (like the "doubtful arguments" mentioned in Romans 14 regarding what to eat or which days to keep holy).

   * Agreement seeks uniformity.

   * The "Echo Chamber" Risk: A church built only on agreement becomes an echo

chamber where people cannot be honest about their doubts or differences for fear of breaking the "unity."

* Character seeks unity.

The Strength of Character

Character—specifically traits like humility, patience, and self-control—acts as a shock absorber. It allows the church to remain a single body even when opinions clash.

Humility over Being Right: Character says, "I value our relationship more than I value winning this argument."

Long-suffering: Unity is preserved when people have the character to endure someone else’s quirks or "rough edges" without withdrawing their love.

Integrity in Conflict: In a character-driven church, when people disagree, they do it directly and kindly rather than through gossip.

Walking it Out: Character in Action

To "walk out" this type of unity, the focus shifts from convincing others to maturing yourself.

Focus on...

The Result

Demanding a consensus on every minor point.

Practicing Grace: Allowing room for "disputable matters" (Romans 14).

A culture of freedom rather than fear.

Avoiding people you disagree with.

Active Listening: Seeking to understand their heart, even if you don't share their view.

Deepened empathy and stronger bonds.

Withdrawing when things get "messy."

Faithfulness: Staying at the table when the conversation gets difficult.

A resilient community that doesn't "break" under pressure.

The "Character List" for Unity

If you want to preserve unity without requiring 100% agreement, these character traits are the essential tools:

* Self-Regulated Maturity: Not letting your emotions dictate your reactions to others.

* Gentleness: Dealing with the "frailty" of others' opinions with a soft touch.

* Forgiveness: Being "quick to clear the air" so that resentment doesn't become a barrier.

In Conclusion

Self-Reflection - God Show Me Questions

1. God, is there any relationship I am currently "tearing" rather than "mending"?

2. Am I more known for my specific opinions or for my love for the brothers and sisters?

3. Where am I allowing "worldly wisdom" to create a divide in my thinking?

4. God, where have I prized being "right" over being "reconciled" in my recent disagreements?

5. Lord, is there anyone in my congregation whom I am intentionally avoiding, and how can I initiate the "agreement in Christ" Paul calls for?

In Unity: Expect Challenges

1. Bitterness from Past Hurts: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.” (Ephesians 4:31)

2. Pride in One’s Own Opinion: “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3)

3. Dealing with Difficult People: “Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.” (Ephesians 4:2)

4. Preferential Cliques: The tendency to only associate with "your people" or those of a similar social status within the church.

"My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?" (James 2:1)

5. Spiritual Pride/Elitism: Feeling that your specific doctrinal understanding or spiritual maturity makes you superior to others. "Don’t be so proud that you think you know it all." (Romans 12:16b)

Praise Points

1. Praise God that He is not a God of confusion but of peace.

2. Praise God for the "Name of Jesus" which is the highest authority and unifier.

3. Praise God for the diversity within the Body that functions in one Spirit.

4. Praise God for His patience with us when we are fractured.

5. Praise God for the promise of a future where every tribe and tongue will be perfectly united.
